Mrs. Gowell was born August 27, 1927 in Muskegon, Michigan. She was the daughter of the late Ruby Bates Schurkamp and Richard Schurkamp. On September 12, 1946, she married the love of her life, the late Clinton Gowell after he returned from his service in the Navy. Her brothers, Raymond Schurkamp of Kansas City, Missouri and Donald Schurkamp of Byron Center, Michigan also preceded her in death. Doris retired from Hinsdale Hospital in Hinsdale, Illinois at the age of 65. Afterwards she went to work for Peyton’s here in Cleveland and retired from there in 2002 at the age of 75. She was very active and enjoyed being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Along with her husband, they were members of the Cedar Ridge Seventh-day Adventist Church here in Cleveland.Survivors include her daughters, Phyllis Lemons and her husband Joe of Cleveland, Cheryl Griffing and her husband Jim of Whitehall, Michigan, her son, Roger Gowell and his wife Connie of Athens, Tennessee, her 8 grandchildren, her 15 great grandchildren, her sister, Beverly Ivins of Cleveland and several nieces and nephews also survive.The Remembrance of Life Memorial Service will be conducted at a later time in Michigan. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, in C/O Bradley County Health Care and Rehabilitation, 2910 Peerless Road, Cleveland, Tennessee 37311.
