Mrs. Fortner was the daughter of the late Eliza Newby Childs and Elex Childs. Her grandson, Cody D. Fortner, her sisters, Leona Bettis, Ruby Helton, Verna Stokes and her brothers, Leonard, Creed and Virgil Childs also preceded her in death. Mrs. Fortner was retired from Cooke’s Manufacturing with 30 years of service. She enjoyed working in her vegetable garden. She always felt blessed so she wanted to bless other people by giving them the vegetables from her garden! Mrs. Fortner was a firm believer in Jesus Christ and she attended the Church of God.Survivors include son, Carl E. Fortner of Birchwood, her grandson, Carl Shane Fortner also of Birchwood, her sister, Dorothy Prentice and her husband J. L. of Birchwood, her special niece, Ann Bettis of Georgetown and several other nieces and nephews also survive.The Remembrance of Life Graveside service and Interment will be conducted Friday, October 9, 2014 at 1:00 P. M. from the McInturf Cemetery in Meigs County with Reverend David Evans officiating. Family and friends will serve as casket bearers. The family will receive friends from 5 until 9 P. M. Thursday at the North Ocoee Chapel of the Jim Rush Funeral Homes who has charge of the arrangements.
