Carrie Underwood Bates, age 94, a resident of McDonald, passed away Friday evening in a Chattanooga health care facility. Mrs. Bates was born May 10, 1923 in Ocoee, Tennessee and she was the daughter of the late Nora Chestina Vickers Underwood and Hershel Lewis Underwood. Her husband, Joe Bates, her son, Joe E. "Buddy" Bates, her grandson, Kris Boring, her sisters, Edna Ledford, Maudie Stinnett, and her brothers, Ray, Lewis and Paul Underwood also preceded her in death. Mrs. Bates was a 1941 Graduate of Polk County High School! She worked for the Bradley County School System with 24 years of service. She worked in the McDonald Elementary School Cafeteria as manager but she was known for her chili and her homemade rolls! More than anything, she was known for loving the children she fed. She was a member of the McDonald Senior Citizens Club. Mrs. Bates was a longtime member of the Cookson Creek Baptist Church but attended the Set Free Ministries.Survivors include daughters, Ruth Boring and her husband Norman of McDonald, Carolyn Culbreth and her husband Ron of Cleveland, Jenny Hawkins and her husband Doyle of McDonald, Dorothy Yarbor and her husband Danny of Greeneville, Tennessee, her 7 grandchildren, her 10 great grandchildren, her 4 great great grandchildren, her daughter in law, Sarah Bates of Cleveland and several nieces and nephews also survive.The Remembrance of Life Service will be conducted Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at 1:00 P. M. with Reverend James Kent officiating. Interment will follow in the Cookson Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with family and friends serving as casket bearers. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 P. M. Monday at the Jim Rush Funeral and Cremation Services Wildwood Chapel who has charge of the arrangements.
