Oh . . . I have so many memories of this dear lady. I had carefully packed these memories away years ago, and thought I had gotten away with it until I saw her name in the paper, and they all came flooding back. Memories of long car rides over the countryside with her and Mr. Howard; trips to Fort Campbell and Fort Knox; long conversations about anything and everything; spending the night; and laughter and sometimes tears. The summer afternoons after church, and taking naps under the shade trees in the front yard – laying on one of her handmade quilts – or riding horses (Dolly and Joe, I believe were their names). One of my most prized possessions is the quilt she made for me. It’s a Dutch Doll quilt. She used shirts from Mr. Howard and their sons for the material, and each of us sewed a few stitches. Yes, I have quite a few memories. She was like a second mother to me those many years ago.
I know Mr. and Mrs. Howard will be among my friends and loved ones who are waiting at heaven’s gate when my time comes – just as I know my parents were among those who were waiting for her. And, oh, what a wonderful time they’re having now! The family, especially Leon, Alvin and Omar, are in my thoughts and my prayers during this time.
Sincerely,
Janet
